In The Secret Message of Shame, psychotherapists Patricia and Ronald Potter-Efron explore what feelings of shame really tell us about our hidden yearnings and aspirations and our deepest concepts of self.  They lead us away from the destructiveness of toxic shame and toward hope, pride, optimism and love by providing a two stage process for healing from shame: understanding and action.

First the authors reveal the core characteristics of shame: what shame is, how it shows up in people’s lives, the difference between normal and excessive shame, and most importantly, the basic ways that people heal their shame.  The second part of the book provides creative approaches to handling shame as it commonly affects daily lives, including its connection to self-esteem, body image and sexuality, anger, relationships, addictive behaviors, and acts of self-neglect and self-sabotage.  Each chapter offers straight-forward, step-by-step guidance to help readers transform feelings of shame into hope and healing.
