Rage is “an experience of excessive anger accompanied by partial or complete loss of: a) conscious awareness; b) a normal sense of self; and/or c): behavioral control.” It can be very dangerous, especially when the rager loses conscious awareness and control over what is happening. Most ragers describe a Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde situation in which they cannot believe that what they just said and did is actually who they are. Instead, they experience their rages as something that happens to them and over which they have little say.

Chapters in this book describe what the rage experience feels like to the rager; the causes of rage, including possible brain disruptions and malfunctions; the difference between sudden and seething rages; four different types of rages (survival, shame-based, impotent and abandonment rages); and, of course, how people can gain control over their rages before they really hurt themselves or others.
